Bug Report – Oasys Shell 22/23 – LS-DYNA PBS Submission Issues

Oasys Shell 22/23 – LS-DYNA PBS Submission Issues

Prepared for submission to Dyna Support

Summary

Two LS-DYNA submission defects remain reproducible in both Oasys Shell 22 and Oasys Shell 23. Direct submission of the same LS-DYNA test through PBS using a submission file completes successfully, indicating that the outstanding behaviour is associated with the Oasys Shell generated files or submission logic.

Scope and Verification Status

Component / Test Status Observation
Direct LS-DYNA PBS submission Working The test job completes successfully when submitted directly using submit-file.txt.
Oasys Shell 22 Affected Both issues described in this report remain reproducible.
Oasys Shell 23 Affected Both issues described in this report remain reproducible.

1. Issue 1 – Incorrect LS-DYNA Command Generated in .temp File

Description

When an LS-DYNA job is submitted through Oasys Shell on DEV-133970, the generated airbag_deploy.temp file omits the continuation character (+) after the first keyword line. The missing character appears to cause the generated LS-DYNA command to be parsed incorrectly.

Working Output: DEV-130983

keyword +

i=airbag_deploy.k +

k=airbag_deploy.kil +

…

Failing Output: DEV-133970

keyword

i=airbag_deploy.k +

k=airbag_deploy.kil +

…

Expected Behaviour

Oasys Shell should generate the first line as “keyword +” so the following LS-DYNA command arguments are correctly continued and parsed.

Actual Behaviour

Oasys Shell generates “keyword” without the trailing continuation character. The issue has been observed in both Oasys Shell 22 and Oasys Shell 23.

2. Issue 2 – Cleanup rm Commands Cause PBS Exit_status = 1

Description

The job script generated by Oasys Shell includes cleanup commands at the end of the script:

rm -f dyna.d

rm -f disk8*

The LS-DYNA calculation can complete, but the generated cleanup section can cause PBS to report Exit_status = 1. When the problematic final lines are removed or prevented from affecting the script result, PBS reports Exit_status = 0.

Expected Behaviour

A successfully completed LS-DYNA calculation should be reported by PBS with Exit_status = 0. Cleanup operations should not change a successful job into a failed job status.

Actual Behaviour

The generated cleanup section can result in Exit_status = 1 even when the LS-DYNA calculation has completed. The issue remains present in both Oasys Shell 22 and Oasys Shell 23.

Previously Used Workaround

A temporary workaround was used to prevent the cleanup commands from determining the final script status:

rm -f dyna.d || echo skip dyna.d

rm -f disk8* || echo skip disk8

Note: This is a workaround only. A permanent product or submission-logic fix is still required.

3. Reproduction and Verification

  1. Prepare the LS-DYNA input file airbag_deploy.k.
  1. Submit the job through Oasys Shell 22 or Oasys Shell 23.
  1. Inspect the generated airbag_deploy.temp file and confirm that the first line is “keyword” instead of “keyword +”.
  1. Inspect the generated job script and confirm that the final section contains “rm -f dyna.d” and “rm -f disk8*”.
  1. Compare the result with direct PBS submission using submit-file.txt. The direct PBS test completes successfully.

4. Supporting Evidence

Figure 1 shows the test directory and generated files, the missing “+” in airbag_deploy.temp, and the cleanup commands in the generated Oasys Shell script.

Figure 1. Oasys Shell 23 test evidence showing the missing continuation character and generated cleanup commands.

5. Impact

  • Oasys Shell submission can generate an incorrectly formatted LS-DYNA command file.
  • PBS can report a successfully completed LS-DYNA calculation as failed because of the final cleanup section.
  • Users may need to submit directly through PBS or apply local workarounds instead of using the standard Oasys Shell workflow.

6. Requested Investigation

  1. Identify why the trailing “+” is omitted from the first keyword line for DEV-133970.
  1. Confirm whether the generated command behaviour is controlled by Oasys Shell, dyna_versions, oasys.submit, or another configuration component.
  1. Prevent cleanup commands from causing a non-zero final PBS exit status after a successful LS-DYNA calculation.
  1. Advise whether a permanent fix or supported patch is available for Oasys Shell 22 and Oasys Shell 23.
